ARUP offers an extensive menu of tests for women’s health management, such as testing for infectious disease diagnosis, hormone imbalance, and other acute and chronic conditions. Many of these tests can be performed in-house at your hospital laboratory. The ARUP Healthcare Advisory Services team can help you determine the most cost-effective utilization patterns.

Sexually Transmitted Infections
Many sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including chlamydia and genital herpes, disproportionately affect women. We offer a wide array of tests that enable clients to have all recommended testing for HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, trichomonas, herpes simplex virus, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and cytomegalovirus performed through ARUP.
The ARUP Consult Sexually Transmitted Infections topic offers a summary of clinical guidelines pertaining to testing for STIs.

Human Papillomavirus Testing - Cervical Cancer Screening
ARUP offers a variety of HPV tests for cervical cancer screening, including cytology (e.g., Pap testing), cotesting, and primary HPV testing, so that you can choose the right test for each patient. Testing options vary depending on a woman’s age, but include cytology, cotesting, and primary high-risk HPV (hrHPV) testing. For testing recommendations, see the ARUP Consult Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Testing - Cervical Cancer Screening topic.
Please note: Pap testing is regulated by strict licensure practices. Contact your local account executive to find out if ARUP is licensed for testing in your state.

Vaginitis
Bacterial vaginosis and Candida (yeast) infections are common conditions that are generally readily treated. Prompt diagnosis is essential for appropriate treatment and optimal patient care.

Hormone Testing
Even small hormonal imbalances can cause widespread effects. Because the female hormone cycle is complex and changes naturally through life stages such as puberty, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and menopause, laboratory hormone testing plays an especially important role in women’s health. In addition to tests to evaluate the female hormone cycle and androgen imbalance, thyroid hormone testing is significant in women’s health. For more information on thyroid tests, visit the ARUP Consult Thyroid Disease Testing page.

Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a potentially treatable condition that can have a significant impact on quality of life. Although screening for osteoporosis is typically performed using imaging techniques, laboratory testing may be useful to assess bone turnover and evaluate for nutritional deficiencies (e.g., vitamin D deficiency). For additional information about bone turnover markers, visit the Osteoporosis topic on ARUP Consult.
Vitamin D tests are frequently misordered. Vitamin D, 25-Hydroxy is the preferred screening test for vitamin D deficiency and the preferred monitoring test for patients receiving vitamin D supplementation.
